The Origin Story

Our journey began with Darren, whose roots in hospitality and brand-building run deep. His father, the President of the legendary Famous Amos Cookies, taught him early on that a brand isn’t only the thing you sell — it’s how people feel when they experience it.
At 15, working at Baskin-Robbins, Darren began to see how quickly a simple interaction could shift someone’s mood. A few small things — acknowledging someone, moving with purpose, creating a moment of connection — could turn an ordinary transaction into something memorable. It wasn’t about the ice cream. It was about how people felt when they walked away.
That idea stayed with him.
Over time, he also saw that much of high-end hospitality focused heavily on presentation and process, but often missed that same human element—the part that actually makes an experience stick.
In 2003, he brought that perspective to the Magic Castle Hotel. Rather than relying on the building itself, he chose to focus entirely on the guest experience. How each moment feels, how each interaction lands.
The result is what you see today: a hotel shaped less by the structure and more by the moments that happen inside it, where the stay feels less like a transaction and more like a story unfolding.
